Growing mushrooms in bulk with the mono-tub Tek.

Growing mushrooms with a mono tub involves creating a controlled environment that mimics the ideal conditions for mushroom growth. The mono tub provides a space for the mycelium to grow and produce mushrooms, while also maintaining the humidity, light and temperature, for a successful grow.

By using a mono tub, growers can maximize their yields and ensure a higher success rate in mushroom cultivation. This method is particularly popular among home growers and small-scale mushroom farmers, as it is relatively easy to set up and requires minimal maintenance. Overall, using this mushroom grow tub can improve the productivity of mushroom cultivation, allowing growers to enjoy a plentiful harvest of home grow mushrooms.

What is a tek?

Well its a short way of saying technique. There are many ways to grow mushrooms. The one we are going to explore, is how to grow mushrooms in bulk, from a spore syringe. With a few simple items, growing mushrooms is both fun and easy.

The mushroom mono tub tek is a popular technique among shroom cultivators due to its simplicity and effectiveness. It involves the use of a large, clear plastic tub as a growing chamber. The tub is filled with a substrate, which is a mixture of organic materials that the shrooms use as a food source. The mono tub provides an ideal environment for the shrooms to grow, as it maintains the right balance of humidity and fresh air exchange.

Although optional the casing layer is another component in the mono tub method. It is a layer of non-nutritious material that is placed on top of the colonized substrate.

The casing layer serves several purposes. First, it helps to maintain the right level of moisture in the substrate, which is essential for the growth of the shrooms. Second, it provides a micro climate that is conducive to the formation of shroom pins, which are the initial stages of shroom growth.

Growing mushrooms using the mushroom mono tub tek is a simple process that can be easily done at home. The mono tub tek involves creating a fruiting chamber out of a plastic tub, with light and air exchange. This is where the mushrooms can grow in a controlled environment. This method is popular among amateur mycologists for its simplicity and its a great way to produce a large harvest of mushrooms in a small space.

To begin the process, you will need to gather the necessary materials, including a plastic tub, mushroom spawn, substrate (such as straw or sawdust), a heating source, and a humidity and light source. Once you have all the materials, you can start by preparing the substrate and mixing it with the mushroom spawn. This mixture is then placed in the plastic tub and incubated until the mycelium has fully colonized the substrate.

Growing mushrooms in a mono tub is a good method for controlled growth. It simplifies the process and allows for easy production in a designated space. This is because the mono tub provides a controlled environment for the mushrooms to thrive. It is an effective way to ensure a successful harvest.

What is Mono tub ?

A monotub is a plastic container used to grow mushrooms. It makes it easy to monitor and care for the growing conditions.

By using a mono tub, growers are able to create ideal fruiting conditions for their mushrooms, such as maintaining proper humidity, temperature, and fresh air.

This helps to ensure a successful harvest of mushrooms. Additionally, mono tubs are easy to set up and can be adjusted to fit the specific needs of different mushrooms.<

Growing mushrooms in a mono tub can be a rewarding and productive experience for both experienced and novice cultivators. It allows for efficient and controlled mushroom cultivation, resulting in high yields of fresh and delicious mushrooms.

Adding your Substrate Mix

  1. Prepare your substrate mixture. This is a sterilized medium, usually Coco coir, Vermiculite and Gypsum, also manure and other substrates can be used as well. a 50/50 mix of Coco coir and vermiculite with work just fine. You can also purchase already sterilized substrate bags will all these ingredients like the ones in the picture online.

Spawning to your mono tub

  1. Inoculating with mushroom spawn is a crucial step in the process of growing mushrooms. This involves adding the fully colonized mushroom mycelium, known as “spawn,” to your substrate.

The spawn serves as the foundation for the growth of mushrooms, providing the necessary nutrients and support for the mycelium to develop and eventually produce fruiting bodies.

By adding spawn to the substrate, you are introducing the mycelium that will grow into the mushrooms you are growing.

Proper inoculation techniques and sterile conditions are important to prevent contamination and ensure the success of your grow.

Colonizing your bulk substrate.

  1. Mix well and cover with with a lid. It is imported to not allow light to see the mushrooms at this time. You can use a solid lid at this time before cutting a hole and adding plastic film for a window. If you have already added a light window to your lid, you can simply cover the mono tub with a towel.

Allow this to sit in the ideal temperature for your strain of mushrooms until fully colonized.

Fruiting your mono tub

  1. Now you can introduce your windowed lid to allow light exchange.

Once the substrate is fully colonized, it’s time to optionally add the casing layer. This can be made from a mixture of peat moss and vermiculite. The casing layer is moistened and then spread evenly over the colonized substrate. This is left to colonize for a few more days until you see the mycelium appearing in the casing layer.

After a few days, the mono tub is moved to a location with light and a temperature of 72-80 degrees F.

Lowering the temperature will encourage the mushrooms to begin growing. Also adding light at this stage encourages your mushrooms to grow toward the light. The casing layer will help to trigger the formation of the shroom pins as well. Thus within a week or two, you should start to see your shrooms growing and fully maturing.

It’s important to maintain the right conditions in the mono tub during the fruiting stage. Growing mushrooms with a mono tub, means maintaining a high level of humidity and ensuring regular fresh air exchange. This can be achieved by misting the inside of the tub with water and fanning it several times a day. Humidity can also be checked with a hydrometer and should optimally be between 80-90%

Maintaining Fruiting Conditions

Maintaining the appropriate temperature and humidity levels within your monotub is critical for the successful cultivation of mushrooms. Mushrooms thrive in specific environmental conditions, and fluctuations in these parameters can lead to poor growth or even failure of the crop. Typically, the ideal temperature range for most mushroom species is between 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). Keeping the monotub in a stable environment, away from extreme temperatures, is essential for fostering optimal growth.

Humidity is another key factor; mushrooms require a high humidity level, generally around 85% to 95%, to develop properly. This can be achieved by regularly misting the inside of the tub to maintain moisture levels. However, be cautious not to over-mist, as excessive moisture can lead to mold growth or other issues detrimental to your mushroom crop. To further enhance humidity, consider using a hygrometer to monitor levels accurately, allowing you to adjust your misting schedule as needed.

In addition to humidity, proper air circulation is vital for mushroom development. Stagnant air can lead to poor growth and increase the risk of contamination. To encourage good airflow, you can create small holes in the monotub’s lid or sides, covered with micropore tape to allow for gas exchange while keeping contaminants out. Regularly fanning the tub with the lid off for a few moments each day can also help circulate air and boost the oxygen levels necessary for healthy mushroom growth.

How Long Does it Take for Mushrooms to Grow.

With diligent care and attention to these environmental factors, you can expect to see signs of fruiting within a few weeks after initiating the fruiting phase. During this time, be vigilant and observe the changes taking place. Small pins, or primordia, will begin to form, signaling that your mushrooms are on the verge of maturing.

The timing of the harvest is crucial to ensure that your mushrooms reach their peak potency and flavor. Each type of mushroom has its best time to be picked. A good rule is to pick them just before the cap fully opens. This stage gives you the strongest mushrooms. It also helps with more growth, allowing for multiple harvests.

By utilizing the monotub tek method, you can effectively cultivate a variety of mushrooms in the comfort of your home. This method is particularly beneficial as it can produce several flushes of mushrooms, meaning you can harvest multiple times from the same substrate.

After the first flush, continue to care for your monotub by maintaining humidity and air circulation. You may be rewarded with additional rounds of delicious, home-grown mushrooms. With patience and diligence
