The PF Classic strain thrives when grown on PF-tek or brown rice flour cakes, which is why it is aptly named. The Pf Classic mushroom takes longer to mature, not releasing spores until the mushrooms are fully developed. Thus resulting in multiple flushes from clean cakes or using the dunk and roll method.
This strain takes a little longer to fully mature than others, and it does not release spores until the mushrooms are fully developed. This results in a higher yield of mushrooms over time, and the cakes can produce multiple flushes.
Additionally, growers have found success using the dunk and roll method. Which allows for extra moisture build by soaking the cakes overnight and rolling in vermiculite. Thus further increasing the potential for a multiple flushes. As the cakes will retain more moisture and have less of a chance of drying out.
The initials “PF” in PF classic and in PF-Tek or PF Technique stand for ‘Psilocybe Phanticus,’ an internet screen name from the 1990s. He created a method for cultivating mushrooms in jars using a mixture of water, vermiculite, and brown rice flour.
It is a common and probably the easiest method of growing mushrooms out there. Making it popular among beginner mushroom growers.
